Ncell Foundation, in collaboration with Khaalisisi and Budhanilkantha Municipality, successfully organised &lsquo;BIN THERE, HACKED THAT!&rsquo;, the first of its kind flagship waste hackathon on the occasion of World Environment Day 2025.&nbsp; 
 
In this groundbreaking event that brought together over 400 applicants, culminating in 13 finalist teams. After an intense day of mentoring, pitching, and prototyping on World Environment Day, &nbsp;the finalists developed and showcased innovative, tech-driven solutions to tackle Nepal&rsquo;s escalating waste management crisis.

Team EcoLoop from Thapathali Campus, Institute of Engineering (IoE) clinched the first position for their innovative solution under the theme Digitize Trash. EcoLoop presented a tech platform that enables households to segregate, track, and dispose of waste responsibly while earning rewards through a gamified system. Team Ecoloop includes Nitesh Kumar Sah, Dharmendra Singh Chaudhary, Ramesh Kathayat, and Bipin Kumar Marasin from Thapathali Campus, IOE.&nbsp; 
 
Likewise, Team Fullstackzerowaste, a team of students from King&#39;s College Nepal, consisting of Anshu Regmi, Rojan Shrestha, and Kabish Pokhrel stood as the First Runner-Up. Their project, aligned with the Landfill to Circularity theme.&nbsp;

The Second Runner-Up was Team Source Code, represented by students from Kathmandu University&rsquo;s Department of Artificial Intelligence. Team members Aman Kumar Jha, Anshu Patel, Vhabuk Thapa, and Aayush Gautam created a data-driven solution under the Waste Without Smoke theme, using AI to help municipalities optimise waste management and track CO2 emissions.&nbsp;

&ldquo;This is the kind of grassroots innovation Nepal needs,&rdquo; remarked Hon&rsquo;ble Minister of Forests and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, who attended the final showcase along with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Budhanilkantha, Ward Chairs, and the Chief Administrative Officer. &ldquo;Waste is not only an environmental issue&mdash;it is an economic and social one. These young innovators are lighting the path forward.&rdquo;&nbsp;

The hackathon marked a bold and forward-looking step toward circular innovation in Nepal. By mobilising young minds, technologists, and environmental changemakers, the event highlighted the power of collaboration and creativity in addressing one of the country&rsquo;s most pressing urban challenges.&nbsp;

Looking ahead, the top three teams will receive mentorship and incubation support from Confederation of Nepalese Industries Young Entrepreneurs Forum (CNIYEF) and will be fast-tracked for pilot opportunities through Khaalisisi and Budhanilkantha Municipality and CNIYEF. Their solutions are now being prepared for real-world implementation in collaboration with municipalities and industry partners. 
In this hackathon, participants were tasked with prototyping real-world solutions for sustainable waste management. Teams worked intensively to develop ideas ranging from smart waste segregation systems and recycling platforms to community-driven composting technologies and data-powered waste tracking tools.&nbsp;

Beyond the competition, the event showcased how strategic alliances between the public and private sectors can create an impactful, scalable solutions. The hackathon spotlighted young changemakers using code, creativity, and climate commitment to reimagine Nepal&rsquo;s waste economy.&nbsp;

The hackathon emphasised four key themes&mdash;Landfill to Circularity, Waste Without Smoke, Women in Waste Entrepreneurship, and Digitize Trash. Notably, over 40% of finalist teams were led or co-led by women&mdash;signaling a promising shift in inclusivity in a sector where women represent less than 5% of the workforce.

The hackathon represented a powerful convergence of the private sector, government, and civic innovators. It was co-organised by Golyan Group and supported by a strong network of partners including Plast Nepal Foundation, Coca-Cola Beverages Nepal, CNIYEF, Nabil Bank, Grow By Idea, CloudFactory, Fusemachines, Ace Institute of Management, Model Institute of Technology (MIT), and Byapar Pathshala.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed and exchanged amidst a programme organised by KMC on Wednesday, marking a collective commitment to empower youth through practical skills and training.

On behalf of KMC, the MoU was signed by Shailendra Jha, Coordinator of the Skill Fair Management Committee of the KMC in witness of member of Gatishil Nepal the implementing partner of the Skill Fair. The fair, which started on May 21, is currently running skill-based training for 2,424 individuals in 10 sectors, covering 37 professions. These include in-demand areas such as cyber security, multimedia, programming languages (Dot Net, Java, PHP), digital marketing, AI and its applications, drone and robotics technology, fibre optics, beauty and grooming, electronics repair, and specialised skills to support individuals with disabilities.

Special Ability Support Skill training is a newly added area this year. Under this category, training is being conducted in two professions&mdash;housekeeping and care services. The housekeeping training is designed for facilitators working with children with hearing disabilities, while the care service training is intended for facilitators of children with Down Syndrome and Autism. Under the electronics, the training sector includes laptop repair technician, AC and refrigerator repair, CCTV repair, and mobile phone repair.

In the garments sector, there is a training in garment fabrication and basic fashion designing. Likewise, under construction sector, training like electrician, plumbing, masonry, welding, and carpentry is being imparted. In the hospitality sector, training is being conducted in four professions&mdash;Barista, Waiter, Fast Food, and Bakery.&nbsp;

In the automobile sector, training is available in three professions&mdash;electric vehicle (EV) maintenance, light vehicle engine repair, and maintenance of both electric and fuel-powered motorcycles and scooters. Under the art and sculpture category, Thanka Painting and Ceramics (terracotta) trainings are being imparted. Training is also being provided in astrology and priesthood.

In the agriculture sector, training is being conducted in flower decoration. Similarly, training related to the stock market is also underway.

Ncell, in collaboration with Uptrendly, has announced the launch of League of Creators, a dynamic nationwide initiative aimed at discovering and empowering Nepal&rsquo;s next generation digital content creators.&nbsp;

With the hype stating &lsquo;Create. Compete. Conquer.&rsquo;, this multi-phase competition offers aspiring creators a platform to showcase their talent under the theme &lsquo;My Network, My Connectivity&rsquo;, gain nationwide visibility, and win exclusive rewards&mdash;including a one-year brand deal with Ncell worth Rs. 10 lakhs!&nbsp;

Selected participants will also get a chance to get personal content creation training from the biggest content creators of the country - Sanjog Koirala, Pratima Adhikari, Mr. Foodie Nepal, Parakram Rana, Ekata Tandukar - as their mentors!&nbsp;

Videos must be posted on both TikTok and Instagram, tagging @Ncell and using designated mentor hashtags such as #TeamSanjog along with #NcellLeagueOfCreators2025 in the caption. The submission deadline is June 10, 2025.

From the pool of submissions from across the country, the top 50 creators will be selected by the mentors for mentorship and exclusive training, wherein 5 mentor-led teams, each will undergo workshops at Ncell ICON. The initiative also includes challenge rounds with new creative briefs and evaluation by expert jury members.

The League of Creators&rsquo; Grand Finale Carnival will be organised on June 28, 2025, announcing the winner and celebrating top performers with live entertainment programme. The winner will be awarded a 1-year brand deal with Ncell worth Rs. 10 lakhs. Similarly, exclusive training with Nepal&rsquo;s top creators, nationwide visibility and networking opportunities are other additional factors compiling this initiative.&nbsp;

Ncell Foundation proudly celebrates the extraordinary achievement of Mr. Pemba Sherpa, a kidney transplant survivor, who successfully summited Mount Everest. Pemba Sherpa is the first kidney transplant recipient to achieve this feat.

This historic achievement not only exemplifies the incredible strength of the human spirit but also stands as a powerful testament that nothing is impossible when dream is fuelled by strong determination. He reached the summit on the morning of May 14.

Ncell Foundation is proud to have supported Pemba in this journey. More than a personal triumph, this achievement served as a beacon of hope for those facing physical challenges, demonstrating the limitless potential of the human spirit and on the other this journey symbolized the urgent call for climate action. He used this platform to raise awareness about the critical need to protect and preserve the Himalayas, which are increasingly vulnerable due to climate change.

Marking World Environment Day 2025, &lsquo;Bin There, Hacked That&rsquo;, the first of its kind flagship waste hackathon, is being organised bringing together techies, creatives, entrepreneurs, and climate leaders to tackle Nepal&rsquo;s growing waste crisis through technology and creativity.&nbsp;

This milestone event is being hosted jointly by Ncell Foundation, Khaalisisi and Budhanilkantha Municipality on June 5 at the Budhanilkantha Municipality Hall, bringing together the country&rsquo;s brightest problem-solvers to reimagine waste as an opportunity.&nbsp;

The hackathon marks a powerful Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between digital pioneers, Nepal&rsquo;s formal waste management sector, and progressive local government. The hackathon aims to catalyse scalable, tech-enabled solutions that address pressing challenges in waste management, recycling infrastructure, plastic pollution, and the empowerment of informal waste workers, especially women.&nbsp;

Nepal generates over 3,000 tons of waste daily, yet formal recycling systems remain underdeveloped, and women represent below 5% of the total waste workforce. &lsquo;Bin There, Hacked That&rsquo; seeks to change that narrative by fostering innovative, inclusive, and actionable ideas to drive a circular economy centred on community, dignity, and climate resilience.&nbsp;

Expanding its customer service further, Ncell has introduced a new concept with the launch of its &lsquo;Ncell Shop-in-Shop&rsquo;. The company&rsquo;s first Shop-in-Shop officially came into operation from today in Bhairahawa.

This first Ncell Shop-in-Shop has been launched in partnership with its Point of Sales (PoS) partner&mdash;New Lumbini A 2 Z Mobile, located in Mailawar, Bhairahawa. Ncell&rsquo;s Chief of Staff, Stephen Rodriguez, inaugurated the Shop-in-Shop amid a special ceremony on Thursday.

Through the Shop-in-Shop, customers can access all services, from basic inquiries to the full range of services just like from Ncell Centers. Customers can get new SIMs, recharge, update KYC, reverify SIM ownership, buy popular packs like the Sadhain ON Renewal, upgrade to eSIM, set up internet settings, and receive various other customer services.

&ldquo;Our customers will now be able to access all customer care services from their nearby Shop-in-Shop. This first Shop-in-Shop, which has officially come into operation today, is an example of the model we aim to expand across different parts of the country. We are working on rolling out more Shop-in-Shops nationwide to broaden and enhance customer service. Ncell’s first ‘Ncell Shop-in-Shop’ launched in Bhairahawa

The government has honoured Ncell as the highest income taxpayer in the country&#39;s information and communications technology (ICT) sector. The recognition was presented to Ncell during a special event held on Friday to mark the 8th National ICT Day 2025 in Kathmandu.

Each year, May 2 is observed as &lsquo;National ICT Day&rsquo; to promote the development and advancement of ICT in the country. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli presented a certificate of honour to Punam Singh, Marketing, Communications, and Sustainability Director of Ncell at the event.

This accolade was conferred on Ncell in recognition of the company&rsquo;s significant contribution to the nation by paying the highest amount of tax in the ICT sector for the fiscal year 2023/24, underscoring its outstanding role in the campaign for the development, expansion, and prosperity of Nepal&rsquo;s ICT sector. Ncell has long been recognised as one of the country&#39;s leading contributors in terms of tax payments.

In the past, Ncell has been recognised multiple times by the government as the highest income taxpayer and the highest taxpayer, among other accolades. In December last year, Ncell was also acknowledged by the Lalitpur Metropolitan City as the highest taxpayer under the institutional taxpayer category for significant tax contributions in the last fiscal year 2023/24.

Since its establishment, Ncell has paid over NPR 340 billion in taxes and fees as of the last fiscal year 2023/24. In the last fiscal year alone, Ncell contributed NPR 20.30 billion in taxes and fees. Additionally, the company is committed to uplifting Nepal and Nepali people by implementing impactful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives through Ncell Foundation. Ncell has contributed over NPR 2 billion under CSR, reaching communities across all seven provinces and directly and indirectly benefiting more than 13 million people nationwide.

Govt. honours Ncell as the Highest Income Taxpayer in ICT

Ncell has become the FIRST and ONLY Nepali company to be officially enlisted as a Data Centre and Cloud Service Provider in Nepal. The Department of Information Technology (DoIT), under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MoCIT), enrolled Ncell on Sunday for both services.

The company was enlisted under the legal provisions outlined in the Data Centre and Cloud Services (Operation and Management) Directives 2025. This follows a thorough inspection of Ncell&rsquo;s infrastructure and a detailed review of its application and submitted documents, which confirmed that the company fully meets the required operational standards and security protocols to provide these services.

The directive mandates that all existing data centre and cloud service providers must enroll with the DoIT within six months of the directive&rsquo;s issuance. Ncell successfully completed the enrolment process well ahead of the deadline.

The directive came into effect on January 28, 2025, following a minister-level decision of the Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung. It lays the foundation for the legal regulation of data centres and cloud services in Nepal.

In accordance with the directive, companies must obtain separate certifications for operating data centres and offering cloud services. Ncell has secured both certifications, making it FIRST and ONLY officially authorised to operate in full compliance with the new legal framework.

Ncell currently operates a high-tech Tier III Integrated Data Centre (IDC) in Nakkhu, Lalitpur, which can serve banks, government agencies, and large enterprises. It also runs two disaster recovery data centres located in Pokhara and Hetauda.

&ldquo;Our commitment to international standards, prioritisation of cybersecurity, and focus on data privacy contributed to the smooth enrolment process. Ncell has become the FIRST &amp; ONLY company in Nepal to receive this recognition from the government. Given the growing market for data centres and cloud services, this certification holds significant importance. &nbsp;We are grateful to the DoIT for this recognition, which reflects Ncell&rsquo;s readiness to support ICT development in alignment with the Digital Nepal vision,&rdquo; said Dion Asencio, Chief Business Officer of Ncell.

During the enlistment process, the DoIT thoroughly reviewed a wide range of documentation, including fire safety protocols, organizational security and privacy policies, Business Continuity Plans, data centre tier classification, and IP pool details. The directive aims to ensure the reliable, secure, and efficient operation of IT systems in the country. The formal enlistment of data centre and cloud service providers is expected to enhance regulation, transparency, and cybersecurity across the sector.
