Ncell brings ‘Yuwa SIM’ targeting Gen Z

In a significant step toward expanding and improving its 4G footprint, Ncell has brought 250 new towers into operation and upgraded capacity of 2,200 sites nationwide last year, enabling customers to enjoy enhanced voice quality and high-speed data services. 
 
This expansion comes at a time when reliable connectivity has become more than a service, it&#39;s a necessity for safety, education, business, and staying close to loved ones, no matter the distance. New towers were installed and brought into operation in various local level and micro markets of all seven provinces, primarily in Madhesh, Lumbini, Koshi and Bagmati Provinces, focusing 4G network enhancement and service expansion.

Province-wise, Ncell installed its towers and took 4G in areas including in Sabhapokhari (Dailekh), Purtimkada (Rukum West) and Bagchaur (Salyan) of Karnali Province. Towers were installed in Ladagada (Doti), Banjariya (Kailali) and Sarswati Tole (Kanchanpur), among other areas of the Sudurpashchim Province. Similarly, dozens of micro markets of Madhesh Province including Hanuman Nagar (Siraha), Bhimpur (Saptari) and Musaharniya (Dhanusha), among others, have benefited from the operation of new towers. 
 
&ldquo;Now the network works very well even inside my house. It is much better than before,&rdquo; said Anisa Mandal from Manharpur, Ward No. 17 of Janakpur Sub-Metropolitan City in Madhesh Province. A BBA student, she is among the thousands of customers benefiting from the operation of new towers. &ldquo;I need mobile and internet a lot for my studies. I have to check college notices online, exchange notes, and learn from YouTube or ChatGPT when I don&rsquo;t understand something. And since my brothers are abroad, I also need the mobile to talk to them regularly,&rdquo; she added. 
 
Of the total of 250 towers, 197 were installed within the last two-and-a-half months, whereas 53 new sites were brought into operation through resource maximization of stock and spare equipment. The company accelerated its new tower installation drive after the resumption of facilitation from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) in May last year. 
 
&ldquo;The addition of these new towers and the capacity upgrade what we have done nationwide ensure wider 4G access for modern mobile broadband and quality voice services for our customers in the respective Provinces&rsquo; local level and micro markets, maximizing the value of connectivity,&rdquo; said Upanga Dutta, Chief Consumer Business Officer of Ncell. &ldquo;This network improvement and expansion is a step towards better connectivity that supports basic communications, businesses, studies, and families who rely on us to stay connected. In terms of the number of new towers installed, over 100 new towers were installed in Madhesh Province, followed by 40 plus towers in Lumbini and over 35 towers in Koshi Province. Similarly, additional towers were installed in Bagmati and Gandaki Province as well. Even during the period when the import of new equipment was restricted, Ncell continued its improvement and expansion drive, installing 53 new towers using stock and spare equipment.

 
This rollout will further strengthen 4G network access and enhance Quality of Service (QoS) for customers nationwide. Launched in May 2017, Ncell&rsquo;s 4G service is designed to deliver world-class connectivity and a superior customer experience through advanced technology. The service has now been expanded to all 77 districts, providing 4G access to more than 95 percent of Nepal&rsquo;s population, helping more people work, learn and stay connected to what matters most.

Ncell boosts 4G network with 250 new towers and capacity upgrade on 2,200 sites

Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Jagadish Kharel, on Sunday inaugurated Ncell&rsquo;s Voice over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) Capacity Enhancement Project at Ncell&rsquo;s data center in Pokhara, during an observation visit. He officially launched the project by switching on the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) system expanded with high-end cutting-edge servers to provide VoLTE and Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) services. 
 
With this capacity enhancement, Ncell can now provide VoLTE service to 5 million active customers from this data centre. As an advanced technology in telecommunications, VoLTE provides high-quality HD voice services with faster call connectivity using the 4G network. 

Similarly, Ncell&rsquo;s Voice over Wi-Fi is a technology that lets users to make and receive calls using their existing Ncell number over any Wi-Fi connection, allowing users to make HD voice calls and send SMS even in areas where mobile signals are weak such as basements, high-rise buildings, or remote areas as long as there is a stable Wi-Fi connection. 

As part of his inspection and courtesy meetings in Pokhara, Minister Kharel visited Ncell&rsquo;s data center in Pokhara, which is currently operating as a Disaster Recovery centre. He was welcomed by Ncell&rsquo;s Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer Dilliram Shrestha and Corporate Communications and Sustainability Director Bishakha Laxmi Khadka.

Following the inspection of the data centre, Minister Kharel said, &ldquo;Infrastructure like this data center of Ncell is contributing to the government&rsquo;s goal of building a Digital Nepal. It stands as one of the key infrastructures supporting Nepal&rsquo;s digitalisation drive.&rdquo; He also appreciated the management and operation of the centre.

Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer shared that the data centre, established and brought into operation in 2012, has been playing a crucial role in Nepal&rsquo;s telecommunications and information technology sector. &ldquo;With the enhancement of VoLTE capacity, we will be extending modern VoLTE services to more customers backed by increased capacity,&rdquo; he said.

During Minister Kharel&rsquo;s visit, Shrestha and Ncell&rsquo;s technical team briefed Minister Kharel on the centre&rsquo;s capacity, technological aspects, and overall role in Nepal&rsquo;s telecommunications and ICT sector.

Minister Kharel inaugurates VoLTE Capacity Enhancement Project

Ncell Foundation has announced the distribution of a total of 2,428 educational kits to students studying in government and community-run schools across Nepal, in line with its commitment made during the Nepal Premier League (NPL) Season 2.

Continuing its 4s for 4 social initiative, Ncell had pledged to provide four educational kits for every four (4s) hit during season 2. Launched last year, the initiative connects the excitement of cricket with classrooms, turning boundaries on the field into brighter futures for students. It reflects Ncell Foundation&rsquo;s continued commitment to translating sporting enthusiasm into meaningful educational support for underserved communities.

During NPL Season 2, a total of 607 boundaries were hit by 99 players, ensuring distribution of 2,428 educational kits. Adam Rossington of Pokhara Avengers contributed the highest 31 fours, which ensured 124 kits for the students. With 26 boundaries, D&#39;Arcy Short of Lumbini Lions secured 104 kits, placing second, while Binod Bhandari of Sudurpaschim Royals contributed 92 kits through 23 boundaries.

The educational kit distribution aims to support students by helping address shortages of essential learning resources. Each kit will include items such as a school bag, notebooks, pencils, sharpeners, erasers, and other basic stationery required for daily learning.

&ldquo;We would like to extend our heartiest congratulations and gratitude to all the players who contributed to this meaningful social initiative. Their performances not only strengthened their teams on the field but also expanded support for education beyond the boundary lines,&rdquo; said Bishakha Laxmi Khadka, Corporate Communications and Sustainability Director at Ncell. &ldquo;Like last year, we will be distributing these educational kits in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure they reach students from the government schools who need them the most.&rdquo;

This year as well, Ncell was &lsquo;Powered By&rsquo; partner of NPL. The company had also provided a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 to players hitting maximum numbers of 4s in each match played during season 2. In addition, Adam Rossington of Pokhara Avengers was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 200,000 for contributing the highest number of fours across the season.

During first NPL Season last year, Ncell Foundation had pledged 2,612 educational kits from 653 boundaries. In total, more than 9,000 educational kits were distributed nationwide, including those pledged under the 4s for 4 initiative, empowering thousands of students with essential learning materials.

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) on May 28, 2025 granted approval to Ncell to issue numbers under this range. NTA has approved this range for Ncell as the mobile numbers under the previously issued ranges&mdash;980, 981, 982, and 970&mdash;were insufficient to continue issuing new SIM cards to customers. 
 
&ldquo;We are thankful to the NTA for granting approval for this new number range, keeping the market situation in mind. After completing the necessary preparations, we started issuing new numbers under this range. At a time when the use of mobile phones has expanded beyond basic communication to include digital transactions and access to various services, these new numbers will benefit both consumers and various service providers,&rdquo; said Upanga Dutta, Chief Consumer Business Officer of Ncell.&nbsp; 
 
With the start of the new number distribution, Ncell has also requested all government and non-government bodies, service provider companies, offices, banks, and financial institutions, those directly or indirectly connected to mobile systems and offering various services to integrate/update this new number range 971b into their systems at the earliest, if not yet done. On the top three scorers&rsquo; list of fours, Pokhara Avengers&rsquo; Adam Rossington hit the highest number of boundaries (27), ensuring the distribution of 108 educational kits. D&rsquo;Arcy Short of the Lumbini Lions secured the second-highest position with 19 boundaries, contributing 76 kits. He is followed by Kathmandu Gorkhas&rsquo; Ben Charlesworth and Binod Bhandari of the Sudurpaschim Royals, whose 17 boundaries each ensured the distribution of 68 kits. 
 
The educational kits distribution initiative aims to bring a positive change in students&#39; education. Ncell has announced the launch of NPL Fan Packs to make this season of the Siddhartha Bank Nepal Premier League (NPL) Powered by Ncell even more exciting. During the NPL period, customers will receive free resources instantly on every purchase of various one-time and renewal packs.
